Barbara Kingsolver’s Prodigal Summer. (Faber & Faber, 2013)
This book is on my list of top ten favourite novels, and heavily features characters who are motivated and inspired by the natural world. Truly memorable and heart-warming read. Barbara Kingsolver trained as a biologist, and many of her works are inspired by science and biology.
Barbara Kingsolver’s Flight Behaviour. (2013)
Another beautifully written tale, with a focus on the environment – and butterflies in particular. On the Appalachian Mountains above her home, a young mother discovers a beautiful and terrible marvel of nature: the monarch butterflies have not migrated south for the winter this year. Is this a miraculous message from God, or a spectacular sign of climate change. Entomology expert, Ovid Byron, certainly believes it is the latter. Flight Behaviour has featured on the NY Times bestseller list and is Barbara Kingsolver’s most accessible novel yet.
